Give back to communities
published: Sunday | May 29, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE GOVERNMENT needs to inject millions of dollars into the ghetto. They have tried by building schools for young people. That is good, but we have to be practical and realise that these people do not want to study. They want money to spend, and then when they have money to spend, then they will decide if they want to further their education and increase their income. That is when you can bring in more centres that offer diploma and certificate courses.

Too much money is being spent on football and cricket that is not really important. The private sector can help as well give back to your community, not just sponsoring sports events. Businesses will be affected when crime kills off so many people. There will be few left to buy goods or services and so they will realise tremendous losses.

So I urge the private sector, if they want to continue to survive, don't just audit your businesses internally but externally as well because crime is taking over and that is one of the biggest threats.

I am, etc.,

SHAKIRA THOMAS

Kingston
