Put them away for life
published: Sunday | May 29, 2005

I BELIEVE THAT the penalty for sexual abuse of anyone, (adult, geriatric or child) should be life in prison, without possibility of parole.( I really think that they should be hanged, but hanging is out for the moment!)

Simply put, a leopard cannot change its spots! Regardless of attempts at rehabilitation in prison, society gets no guarantee that a rapist will not return to his old ways, upon release from prison. Moreover, research has proven that there is a high rate of recidivism among rapists.

Secondly, since most rapists are known to the victim (father, stepfather, grandfather, family friend, neighbour, god father, etc!) it stands to reason that after serving the sentence, the rapist is likely to return to the environment in which the first atrocity was committed. This puts the victim at risk all over again. Logically, if convicted, proven rapists are put away for life, then society only has the burden of monitoring and protecting vulnerable people from new, emerging rapists. This frees us from the burden of having to monitor the activities of proven felons.
