THE EDITOR, Sir:
A LETTER appeared in the paper on May 24 disagreeing with the PSOJ's anti-crime initiative. The writer suggested that instead of closing businesses, they should call on Government to denounce lawlesness in the society. It is my recollection that the government has done this on numerous occasions before with no success.
How many more statements and press releases do we need to realise that the government is not capable of addressing crime or any of the myriad of other problems that afflict the country?
The solution lies in the people of Jamaica showing their utter dissatisfaction with the status quo by showing up in the streets in massive numbers over a sustained period of time.
Let the government know they will not ride this one out like all other one-day events before. This protest by the PSOJ could be the start of something along those lines.
I totally agree with their action and hope other organisations and the citizens themselves will join them.
People should wake up and realise that partisan politics is not the only way to solve this puzzle. Political parties see winning elections as an end in itself.
After they have won and are faced with the task of governing, they are at a loss. I wish the PSOJ success in what I hope will be a first step.
I am, etc.,
