We are a 'separated country'
published: Monday | May 30, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE 'SHUTDOWN' by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica has sparked many arguments in many nooks and crannies. From granny to the little child who have sense. Many are saying "Why now?"

Over the years there have been many persons who were slaughtered and nothing was done but 'tight-lipped and grumbling under breath'. So many children have been brutally killed, "so what happen to the seven-year old?" everyone is asking.

Indeed, we are a 'separated country'. Prejudices and injustices have become our pathway. Love and respect are shown according to one's level in life, "the rich and the poor".

In my view, curbing of violence should have started a very long time ago not now when the tree has grown so thick with a heavy trunk and the horse has galloped through the gate and has gone many furlongs.

If we all had cared about the country we should show the patriotism by our involvement. Everyone should participate for the cause of creating something better. To get rid of this treacherous monster, it is on everyone's shoulder.

Why weren't the government agencies involved, closed their offices for an hour or two to show some solidarity, or even observe a minute's silence for those who died innocently?

Where is the solidarity? What is happening in the country is a vexed situation. The citizens have now become wary. Where are our leaders?

I am, etc.,
