Constant Spring slow down Waterhouse
published: Monday | May 30, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

WATERHOUSE FAILED to capitalise on the momentum from their huge midweek win as they could only manage a 1-1 draw against 10th place Constant Spring in their Wray and Nephew Premier League fixture yesterday.

Waterhouse, fresh from a 1-0 win with only 10 players over second place Portmore United, went to Constant Spring looking to build on their success and advance further up the table, this despite coach Maxwell's insistence that the one million dollar prize for topping the preliminary round is not a priority.

They, however, found themselves a goal behind when a corner in the 33rd minute ended up on the boot of Shawn Hunter, who fired to the left of goalkeeper Richard McCallum to put his team a goal ahead.

This elicited an immediate response from Waterhouse and a Weston Forrest corner two minutes later saw an unmarked Kirk Ramsey rise high to head the ball powerfully past goalkeeper Ralston Robinson a spectator in the event to bring his side level going into the half-time break.

A choppy second half saw neither team really able to settle nor control the game. It was characterised by a great many inaccurate passes and sloppy play.

Waterhouse had a good chance to surge ahead in about the 63rd minute when Kevin Lamey, finding himself unmarked, placed the ball wide of Ralston Robinson and the goal itself.

Constant Spring, determined to take at least a share of the points, defended resolutely and allowed Waterhouse very little space to play.

Constant Spring made a good attempt to snatch all three points in injury time when a ferocious volley by Carlos Williams forced keeper Richard McCallum to make a brilliant save.

Constant Spring's Maurice 'Danny' Lyn thought his team gave a very creditable account of themselves.

PLAYED PRETTY WELL

"I think we played pretty well. We moved the ball well and did what we had to do. Waterhouse came for three points but we were able to slow the ball game down, hold our composure and come away with a draw."

Waterhouse coach Geoffrey Maxwell was very disappointed with his team's performance.

"I am very disappointed, quite frankly, because I thought that this was a game that we dominated about 80-90 per cent of it but these things will happen after you're coming off a very big win against one of the top teams. But we'll reorganise and get ready for the semi-finals."

The draw puts Waterhouse in third place on 64 points following a 6-2 thrashing of Reno by Tivoli Gardens. The point earned by Constant Spring puts them a point and a place above now 10th place Reno, who remained on 28 points.
