Power in numbers
published: Thursday | June 2, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE to congratulate the PSOJ on its initiative. I notice with disappointment that some sectors of society criticise the effort made saying this again will not succeed. I say to them, if it does not succeed it is because they did not support it. Support it we should as there is power in numbers.

We do not know the power of democracy as we rarely use this overwhelming power that we, the people of Jamaica, hold in our hands. Never have we had widespread, national, peaceful demonstrations to change the direction of our country. Because we lack this experience we also lack faith in our very own influence. So let us utilise the powers given us by the drafters of our Constitution and demand from our elected leaders the performance we deserve. We the people have this tremendous power in our hands. Now is the time to use it.

In the 1970's the then Government of Jamaica-owned telephone company tried to raise international call charges. The members of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce issued an ultimatum to Government. The Government backed off and did not pass on proposed additional charges.

Let us not throw away this power which we have, but use it as it has never been used for our greater good.

After the Battle of Britain Winston Churchill, speaking of the few fighter pilots who saved his beloved country, said: "Never was so much owed by so many to so few."

Of our democratic history and our underutilisation of power I say, "Never was so little accomplished by so many."

I am, etc.,

WILLIAM CRAIG
