Lawyers' illness changes date of murder trial
published: Thursday | June 2, 2005

JUNE 10 HAS been set as trial date for Steve Bitter, 42, businessman of a Kingston address who is charged with the murder of his 90-year-old grandfather, Ronald Bitter.

The case was set for trial this week in the Home Circuit Court, but had to be put off because Bitter's attorneys-at-law Delano Harrison, Q.C. and Hugh Thompson informed the court that they were both ill.

It was reported at first that the deceased Ronald Bitter had fallen and hurt himself.

A post-mortem was performed on the body and it was discovered that the deceased suffered broken ribs and damage to his liver. The medical report disclosed that the injuries were consistent with a severe beating.

The Crown is alleging that on September 16, 2003, Bitter severely beat Ronald Bitter resulting in his death.

After the application for an adjournment was made by Mr. Thompson, Mr. Justice Basil Reid remanded Bitter in custody until June 10.
