Thanks to the Venezuelan soldiers
published: Saturday | June 4, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN 2004 a group of people undertook the building of a new school in Rocky Hill, Sheffield, Westmoreland. This school was desperately needed by the children of Rocky Hill and its completion is in sight. On behalf of Linda Klein, the Negrilsistas and Friends, I would like to express our most sincere thanks to the Venezuelan soldiers, doing hurricane relief work in Negril, who donated the heat-resistant zinc for the roof and installed it for us. Special thanks go also to the Negril Rotary Club for their help with some of the financing of the roof.

It has been a long hard road for us in obtaining the necessary funds to even consider such a project. We are not affiliated with any other groups, but simply a group of visitors to Jamaica from the United States, Canada, and Europe who feel a special bond with your beautiful country. We have received money from our friends, relatives and acquaintances as well as from a special lottery which we held on-line with Negril.com. Prizes ranged from a week's stay for two at Negril Tree House to art work, etc.

The actual building has three classrooms, toilets, showers, staffroom, kitchen and a storage area. Much of the building was done by volunteers from Westmoreland in conjunction with visitors to Jamaica and we thank them profusely. We still have work to do since the plumbing, electricity, windows (shutters), desks, etc. are not yet in place. We will, somehow, have to find the rest of the funds, but hope that the children will be in the school for the next school year.

Should any of your readers like to help with the finishing touches for the school please contact me at the email address below.

I am, etc.,
