THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE NATIONAL Road Safety Council wishes to express its deep shock and most profound regret at the tragic death of Lloyd Brown and his companion Sandra Campbell. The jaws of death continue to widen and engulf our nation with their ever-increasing thirst for blood.
Mr. Brown was a very active member of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers' Association (JGRA), which he served as president for four terms. As the JGRA is a member organisation of the Council, we have been associated with him over the years. He was very supportive of road safety initiatives and as immediate past president, was still integrally involved in the planning of 'National Road Safety Month' June 2005.
At one of the many planning meetings recently concluded, he lamented the high level of crime, not knowing what was ahead.
At the council, we have, over the years, compiled comparative figures on the two causes of violent death in Jamaica murder and road accidents. We note the widening disparity as some among us go about snuffing out the lives of others with calculated impunity. The lawless among us have been allowed to feel that there will be no sanction applied for their wrongdoing. This situation has to change and very quickly. This will necessitate the swift and effective enforcement of the law, the provision of adequate social services, economic empowerment and community rebuilding. The time to act is NOW.
We will surely miss the charming and affable Mr. Brown and we offer our sincere condolences to his children, other family members, friends and the JGRA family. Condolences also to the family and friends of Sandra Campbell.
May God help us all and guide us, as only He can, to a brighter day.
I am, etc.,
PAULA FLETCER
