MCKENLEY
JAMAICA'S OLYMPIC Games mile-relay gold medallist Herb McKenley has been hospitalised in Atlanta.
The 82-year-old McKenley, who teamed up with George Rhoden, Arthur Wint and Les Laing to win the mile-relay gold medal in Helsinki 1952, suffered a mild stroke early last week while in Atlanta, Georgia and was taken to hospital where he has been under observation since.
It is said that McKenley, who also won silver medals at the 1948 Olympics in London and returned to pick up the same colour medal four years later in Helsinki, went to visit his children in Atlanta when the unfortunate incident happened.
A source close to the family, told The Gleaner that his wife said McKenley is okay and is to be discharged shortly.
It was not the first time that McKenley, the first man to run the one-lap event under 46 seconds, was being affected by a stroke.
The track and field legend was first known to have suffered an attack on his way to the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998, and also in February 2002.
McKenley is one of Jamaica's most famous Olympic athletes, as he had reached the finals of all sprint events from 100-400 metres.
