iTunes exec wants nothing to do with J'can musicians
published: Wednesday | June 8, 2005

Sandor Panton of Top5Jamaica.Com, in association with the Gleaner Online, guides you through what's new, cool and interesting on the Internet.

From Jamaica to the wider Caribbean and the rest of the World, this is the 'Week on the Web'.

BRITAIN'S POPULAR black newspaper, The Voice, recently broke news about a manager at Apple's iTunes online music retail shop who admitted that he wants nothing to do with Jamaican musicians.

His response to an email from dancehall deejay Buju Banton's public relations team was blunt and to the point as he stated "Please remove me from any list having to do with this artist or any Jamaican artist actually."

Many in Jamaica's music industry are naturally angered by this statement, as it comes from an individual who should be unbiased and objective given the position he holds.

Email forwards about this incident are making their way all over the Web, so there may be more to come yet.

WEBSITES OF THE WEEK

This week's featured websites focus on resources that are mainly for the Jamaican Diaspora.

A study done in 2003 by the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) reported that in the last 50 years, at least one million Jamaicans migrated to the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.

It is estimated that over five million Jamaicans live outside Jamaica, and the Internet has become an important place of refuge for Jamaicans looking to stay in touch with 'their own kind' and their culture.

http://www.ackee.com Online since 1998, the main function of this site is to help people to locate old acquaintances.

The site has two main sections the first section allows you to search for an individual by name, and the second allows you to post a message or 'notice' with details about the person(s) you seek.

http://www.whaddatny.com A dancehall/reggae portal for Jamaicans in New York and neighboring states in the U.S.

An interesting current feature is its recent audio interview of the upcoming singer, Tami Chynn.

The NBC news network reported recently that 43 U.S. states have formed a coalition in an attempt to identify a method of electronically collecting a sales tax on all Internet purchases originating from their states.

Wow! If Jamaica's Finance Ministry got wind of this idea, it might speed up the passage of the country's long-promised e-commerce legislation.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

A cellphone ring tone has topped the UK Singles Chart for the second consecutive week. Crazy Frog's Axel F was such a popular ring tone for the cell phone loving British and Europeans that its creators decided to make it into a song.
