How to apply for a work permit

UNDER THE proposed fee structure, all applicants are required to fill out the newly designed application form and pay a non-refundable processing fee of $1,000, whether they are applying for permit or exemption.

Work permit and marriage exemptions will only attract the processing fee.

It will cost an applicant a minimum of $10,000 for three months and $20,000 for any period in excess of three months but less than six months.

A sum of $30,000 is charged for a permit for any period over six months but less than one year.

Work permits for one year will cost J$40,000 and for each additional quarter $10,000 will be added.

Work permits covering a two-year period will cost J$80,000 and for three years $120,000.

A fee of $500 is charged for replacing lost, damaged or stolen cards. Fees will be collected through any branch of the National Commercial Bank islandwide and will be paid in two instalments.

THE PROCESS

The turnaround time for approval of a work permit is between four and six weeks. Application forms can be obtained at the Work Permit Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, 1F North Street, Kingston and at any of the parish offices islandwide, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (Monday to Thursday) and 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (Fridays).
