In the end, the judges gave in to the heavenly taste and temptingly beautiful creations of the girls from St. Hugh's High School in St. Andrew. The trio, Elim Beckford, Nadrene Grant, and Joy-Ann Humphreys won the palate of the judges and the golden trophy in the first Culinary Arts Nutritious Foods Competition held May 18 at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston.

Seventeen schools from across the island took part in the competition organised by The Schools' Wellness Club, an extra-curricular programme developed by the Blue Cross of Jamaica in association with Jamaica National Building Society and Andrew's Memorial Hospital. The competition was held in association with the Jamaica Cultural Development Society (JCDC).

The day-long competition was divided into two age groups ­ seven to 10, in which participants were required to make nutritious drinks; and those 11 to 16, who were required to prepare a main dish (using a method to reduce fat), dessert and a low-caloric snack.

Marcia Streete-Hendricks, Blue Cross of Jamaica's School Programme Coordinator explained that the primary objective of the competition was to interest students in creating nutritious dishes as healthy alternatives to fast foods.
