Musicians, singers for V/X 'Evening Escape'
published: Thursday | June 9, 2005

BOURKE

JIMMY SOMMERS is not exactly an unfamiliar face. After all, he did do a stint on The Young and The Restless.

On Sunday, June 19, however, the soaps will be off his mind and the Alto saxophone in his hands as the musician turned actor (briefly) plays at Appleton Estate V/X Evening Escape.

He will not be the only musician with prime billing on the concert, which takes place at The Fault Line on Skyline Drive in Jacks Hill, St. Andrew, as guitarist Dwight Pinkney will add his strumming to the evening. The duo of Chakademus and Pliers, Suzanne Couch, Gem Myers and the 50/50 Band make for a varied line-up.

Appleton Estate V/X Evening Escape with Jimmy Sommers Live was launched last Wednesday at Up On the Roof, Knutsford Boulevard, New Kingston.

Sommers' third album, 'Lovelife' follows his 1997 debut 'James Café' and the 2001 'Urban Groove'. On the title track he exchanges notes and lines with Macy Gray and the album also includes 'He Loves Somebody', 'Havana Nights', 'Ride Ride, Ride' and a remake of Kool and The Gang's 'Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It').

And being named by People magazine as one of its 50 Most Eligible Bachelors in 2002 does not hurt either.

Kevin Bourke of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum pointed out at the launch that it is an "early event. Gates open at six in the evening to facilitate the seven p.m. start time."

"Tickets for Appleton Estate V/X Evening Escape will be available at our primary ticket outlet, What's On Café at Devon House, for $2000, while limited tickets will be available at the gate at a cost of $2,500. The price is inclusive of Appleton V/X cocktails and food," Bourke said.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 10, for the Father's Day event.

Concerts at 'The Fault Line' have a long and storied history, beginning about 15 years ago. In the early years. Shabba Ranks, Mykal Roze and Papa San were among the persons who performed there, with the Thievery Corporation bringing its bossa nova and jazz samplings, complete with turntable wizardry, for a live recording of their second album.

Peter Couch says that the purpose of the concerts was "as a vehicle to bring back live music performances as well as a vehicle for crossing the music and, yes, cultural divide."

The series was suspended after a five year run, but once again The Fault Line will be a meeting place of cultures for 'Appleton Estate V/X Evening Escape with Jimmy Sommers Live', the first in a series of Appleton Estate V/XIP signature events.
