THE ISLAND will continue to experience outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms as a result of a tropical depression that has developed 600 kilometres west southwest of Negril point.
Fishers and marine interests are being urged to exercise caution due to strong winds and deteriorating sea conditions in the area of showers and thunderstorms.
Glenroy Brown, weather forecaster at the National Meteorological Centre, said the depression is not a threat to Jamaica; however, "we will continue to have outbreaks of light to moderate showers."
He said the depression is expected to develop into the first tropical storm for the season within 24 hours. The system is expected to move towards the north and away from Jamaica as it develops.
Several sections of the island, mainly western and central parishes, have been experiencing rainfall since Monday. This, the National Meteorological Centre said, was being influenced by a broad area of low pressure over the western Caribbean, which developed into a tropical depression late yesterday.
The centre said the low pressure area, located just north of Honduras, has extended eastward, resulting in the formation of clouds associated with showers and thunderstorms across Jamaica.
