Opposition leader calls for review of Corruption Prevention Act
published: Thursday | June 9, 2005

GOLDING

OPPOSITION LEADER Bruce Golding has called for the appointment of a joint select committee to conduct a review of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Giving notice of a resolution in Parliament Tuesday, Golding also called for the review of the operations of the Corruption Prevention Commission.

The Opposition leader noted that the Corruption Prevention Act was enacted in 2000 for the establishment of the Corruption Prevention Commission (CPC).

"Be it resolved that a joint select committee be appointed, as a matter of urgency, to conduct a review of the Corruption Prevention Act and the operations of the CPC and make recommendations to Parliament as to what changes may be necessary to ensure that the objectives of the Act are fully achieved," Golding said.

He further stated that the Act was amended in 2002 to include its review from time to time by a committee of both Houses of Parliament. The first such review should have been conducted no later than three years after May 2001.

The Opposition leader pointed out that the failure to conduct such a review violates the Act.
