THE NATIONAL Meteorological Service is forecasting continued outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms for much of the island as Tropical Storm Arlene moves towards the north at 13 kilometres per hour away from the north-western coast of Cuba.
However, the Met Service said while there may be an improvement in the weather tomorrow, heavy showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave could affect the island on Sunday and Monday. Tropical Storm Arlene is not a direct threat to Jamaica.
NEAR WESTERN TIP OF CUBA
At 4:00 p.m. yesterday, the centre of Tropical Storm Arlene was located near latitude 20.2 degrees north and longitude 84.2 degrees west. This is about 180 kilometres south-south-east of the western tip of Cuba. The western section of Cuba began feeling the effects of Arlene yesterday as the centre of the system passed at approximately 65 kilometres per hour.
The storm is expected to gain strength as it gradually increases speed with a turn towards the north north-west today. Based on the projected path, Tropical Storm Arlene is expected to reach the mainland of the United States by tomorrow.
In the meantime, the Met Service is urging fishers and other marine interests to exercise caution as gusty winds and deteriorating sea conditions are likely to occur in the vicinity of showers.
