Authorities move to address shortage at May Pen Hospital
published: Friday | June 10, 2005

WITH THE May Pen Hospital accepting emergency cases only, arrangements have been put in place for persons to receive attention at the Mandeville, Kingston Public and Spanish Town hospitals, the Ministry of Health disclosed yesterday.

The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) is pursuing all options to have the vacancies for medical positions filled. However, like other regions in the rural areas, the authority has had difficulties attracting doctors, as the preference is for positions in the Corporate Area.

The region is addressing the May Pen issue in the following ways:

Fast-tracking arrangements to facilitate the internship programme. This should enable the facility to resume near-normal operations by the end of the month.

In the interim, the gap is being covered by doctors working overtime.

Preparing for an intake of medical doctors who have completed their internship to fill positions in July, through the Placement Secretariat.

The Health Ministry said every effort is being made to have the hospital return to normal operations in the shortest possible time.
