THE BUREAU of Special Investigation (BSI) said it has collected eight statements in connection with the controversial killing of 19-year-old Leon Johnson, allegedly by the police, in August Town, St. Andrew, last Thursday.
Speaking with The Gleaner on Wednesday, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Granville Gause said while his team is awaiting the post-mortem results, ballistics tests already have been conducted on the weapons the police were carrying at the time.
"Their hands have been swabbed and quite a few things have been done," reported ACP Gause.
Allegations are that a police party was on patrol in the community, and upon reaching Escarpment Road it came under fire from a group of gunmen. When the shooting ended, Mr. Johnson was found with gunshot wounds.
COPS OFF FRONT-LINE DUTY
Residents have denied the police's claim of a shoot-out, and about 200 citizens marched to Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas' office last Friday to protest the shooting death. The five policemen implicated in the incident have been removed from front-line duties, pending further investigation.
"I am asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, do not hesitate, just call me; if you don't want to come, then I will come to you," said ACP Gause.
