Walter set to claim key post
published: Friday | June 10, 2005

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

NATIONAL COACH Jackie Walter could become the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica's (ASAJ) technical director.

The ASAJ announced a vacancy for the position on its website: www.swimjamaica.com, on June 1, seeking a person to develop its competitive junior and senior swimming programmes while providing guidance to the association's technical committee on the strategies for development of the sport in Jamaica.

The likelihood is that Walter will take over the position as the ASAJ's top dog.

Walter has already been acting in the capacity, as she has been working with two local coaches in an attempt to develop, not only their skills at coaching at the national level, but the skill of the swimmers around the island.

INTERESTED IN POSITION

When The Gleaner spoke to Walter, she said she was interested in the position, but was unsure about her chances.

"I am applying for the position. They have just advertised the position this week and it closes tomorrow (today)," said the national coach.

"They might get somebody else. I'm interested and they know that. When the advertisements close I'll have a better idea of where I stand," she said.

However, ASAJ vice president Kendese Nangle, said: "We are in discussions with Jackie Walter regarding the position but nothing has been confirmed yet.

"We are currently working with a pool of coaches right now to enhance their development and to give them an opportunity to become national coaches, so she is working in the capacity, more or less, of a technical director because she has oversight responsibilities while using the assistance of two coaches," he said.
