NWC reconnects standpipes
published: Saturday | June 11, 2005

DONALD BUCHANAN

The National Water Commission (NWC) has begun reconnecting more than 200 standpipes that were disconnected across the island.

The agreement was reached during a meeting with Minister of Water and Housing, Donald Buchanan; Minister of Local Government, Portia Simpson Miller; president of the NWC, E.G. Hunter; and representatives of the Ministry of Finance.

The NWC, as part of an aggressive drive to recover millions of dollars in debts, began disconnecting standpipes across the island to recover an outstanding bill of more than $100 million from the Ministry of Local Government.

Charles Buchanan, corporate communications manager of the NWC, said the Local Govern-ment Ministry is expected to make a $35 million downpayment next week. He said an audit is to be conducted to determine the amount of money owed and work out a suitable payment arrangement.
