published: Thursday | June 16, 2005

SAMUELS

SEVEN JAMAICANS have been included in West Indies 'A' team squad, which was announced yesterday.

The Jamaicans included in the Daren Ganga-led 15-man squad are Marlon Samuels, David Bernard, Jermaine Lawson, Carlton Baugh, Dwight Washington, Xavier Marshall and Nikita Miller.

The 'A' team tour, which will run from June 16 to July 17, will include three four-day matches against the Sri Lanka 'A' team and five one-day matches.

Apart from captain Ganga, a Trinidadian who has played 31 Tests and 28 one-dayers, Samuels, with 19 Tests and 57 ODIs, is the most experienced player in the touring party.

Baugh, with five Tests and six ODIs, Lawson (10 Tests, 11 ODIs), Bernard (one Test, four ODIs), Washington (one Test) and Marshall (six ODIs) are the Jamaicans that have played for the West Indies.

The other Jamaican, Miller, who took the most wickets in the Carib Beer regional first-class tournament earlier this year, along with Guyana's Ryan Ramdass, are the players that have not played for the regional senior team.

The full squad, which will have Guyanese Narsingh Deonarine who represented the West Indies in two Tests as its vice captain, is: Ganga (captain), Deonarine, Samuels, Dwayne Smith (six Tests, 26 ODIs), Bernard Jr. , Tino Best (nine Tests, six ODIs), Lawson, Baugh Jr., Washington, Dave Mohammed (two Tests), Marshall, Kerry Jeremy (six ODIs), Runako Morton (five ODIs), Ramdass and Miller.

The squad leaves the Caribbean on Friday and will be managed by Jamaica's Lyndel Wright while Ian Allen will act as coach.
