Notice quits
published: Friday | June 17, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

Former Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Raymoth Notice.

DR. RAYMOTH Notice, the former Mayor of Spanish Town made a tearful exit from that position yesterday, one day after appearing in the Bog Walk Resident Magistrate's Court for physically abusing his wife.

The charges were dropped after a no-order was made in the assault case brought by Verna Notice.

Dr. Notice who resigned from the Department of Correctional Services five years ago to begin what appeared at first to be a bright and promising political career, tendered his resignation during a meeting with the top brass of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), held at Cecil's Restaurant in the Old Capital.

"It was a very emotional moment for me and some of the councillors. Some were upset but I believe I made the right choice. Doing this (resigning) has only made me a stronger person," said Dr. Notice, who is now contemplating his future in politics.

SEARCH FOR KILLERS

The Bog Walk police are, in the meantime, continuing their search for the killers of Otis Doyley of High Mountain district, St. Catherine, who were said to be travelling in a vehicle assigned to the former mayor at the time Doyley was killed. The police seized the vehicle on Tuesday in order to conduct forensic tests on blood and flesh samples allegedly found inside the vehicle. Dr. Notice told The GleanerWednesday that he is always in control of his vehicle and was co-operating with the police.

The medical doctor penned his resignation letter only minutes before meeting with JLP leader Bruce Golding, deputy leader James Robertson, general secretary Karl Samuda, chairman Dr. Ken Baugh and Members of Parliament Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and Abe Dabdoub. The meeting was called by Dr. Notice.

Reports are that Mr. Golding insisted that Dr. Notice had to go, in the interest of the party. The councillors will meet in caucus on Monday to decide on the future leadership of the JLP-dominated parish council. Parts of Dr. Notice's resignation letter read:

"In light of my present dilemma and the challenges my family now face, I have in my humble way lost moral authority. Leadership is about accepting wrongs, failures, facing challenges, but living by moral principles.

FAMILY UNIT

Presently I have pledged to my wife and children that our family (unit) must be maintained and for that reason we have started a new process of rebuilding.

To the constituents I serve and to those who have supported me, I apologise for any embarrassment I may have caused the council and the Jamaica Labour Party. To the churches, the business community, thanks for your support. I meant well to all especially the people of Bog Walk, the constituency of East Central St. Catherine and the people of Spanish Town."
