published: Friday | June 17, 2005

WESTERN BUREAU:

A MAN was detained in connection with the seizure of 800 pounds of ganja, during a joint security operation along the Parottee beach in St. Elizabeth yesterday.

The quantity of the drug seized has a street value of $4 million. The find was made during a joint operation between members of the Area Three Narcotics and Flying Squad teams, the St. Elizabeth police, and members of the Jamaica Defence Force.

IDENTIFY WITHHELD

The identity of the man, who was arrested near the area where the bust was made, is being withheld pending further investigations. No formal charges have been levelled against him.

A motor car was also confiscated in the raid which took place between 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The police have theorised that the drug was to be picked up by a vessel. Corporal Angella Williams, the Constabulary Communication Network's liaison officer for St. Elizabeth, said that "14 knitted bags with about 111 packages of compressed ganja were found in bushes along the seashore in the Parottee area."
