WESTERN BUREAU:
HOLMWOOD TECHNICAL'S Schillone Calvert is rated the leading 200 metres junior female athlete going into next month's International Association of Athletics Federation's (IAAF) World Youth Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco.
According to a leading track and field website, 'Tilastopaja', the 16-year-old Calvert, who ran 23.44 seconds earlier this year, has the top time going into the event for athletes 18 years old and younger, that will be held from July 13-17.
This time is well below the 25.90 qualifying time and, according to the IAAF website, the qualifying time must be run between January 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.
Calvert, who turns 17 in July - 10 days after the event, is one of several Jamaican junior athletes with top 10 times going into the meet with Wolmer's Boys' Tarick Edwards appearing on three separate listings.
Edwards has the third-best long jump measurement - 7.51m, the eighth-best high jump mark of 2.10m and 15th-best 400m time - 48.32 seconds.
Calvert, a relay medallist from last year's World Junior (Under-20) in Italy where she also made the 100m final, is the only top-ranked Jamaican however and is also listed third in the 100m, with 11.73 seconds.
Mt. Alvernia High's Alecia Cutenar also appears on both the 100m and 200m lists. The 15-year-old is 14th in the 100m (11.91 seconds) and eighth in the 200m (23.93).
Edwin Allen High's Kimberly Smith, a medallist in the WJC relays last year, as well as St. Jago's Natasha Ruddock and Daniel Jeffrey of Immaculate are also in the top 23 on the 100m list.
Another St. Jago athlete, Latoya King, is the third-fastest on the 200m list with a 23.68 clocking.
