Apply the laws fairly
published: Monday | June 20, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WANT to thank you for publishing the views of our people. I have two matters I would like to mention. The first matter concerns income tax refunds by the Government of Jamaica. It is a known fact that if one is late with the payment of one's income tax the Government charges interest and penalty on the outstanding amount and further issues summons to attend court. Yet, when one is due a refund by reason of overpayment it takes ages to get any response. The Government through the Ministry of Finance and the Income Tax Department needs to have a heart and be fair in its dealings with the taxpayer.

My other point concerns the double standard of the KSAC. Right now as the rain falls people are building houses along the banks of the Sandy and other gullies in our city. Where are the building codes for these people? Is the KSAC awaiting another disaster to happen?

Let the laws be applied fairly across the nation.

I am, etc.,

K. AUSTIN
