Land of murderers and extortionists
published: Monday | June 20, 2005

THE EDITOR, sir:

IT IS alarming to read that Jamaica has the third highest murder rate not in the Caribbean but in the world! How do we equate ourselves with Colombia and South Africa? These countries have populations of 42,954,279 and 44,344,136 respectively. I often wonder why my country has grown from the beautiful Caribbean island to which I would without a doubt invite anyone to one that I myself want to run away from. I have, for the better part of my life been very patriotic. I am now very humbled by the fact that I can no longer stand up for my country, as it is now known worldwide as the land of murderers and extortionists.

What is the Government doing about all of this? How many must die before they say enough is enough, and ask Reneto Adams and others like him, along with the JDF to take back the streets. How can the police protect and serve when they are not getting the support they need?

We need to take a page out of the book of Trinidad & Tobago and implement harsher punishment, denying of bail to repeat offenders etc.

I am honestly scared. I wonder when are they going to kick my door in and brutally murder me and my family. I am sure many Jamaicans share my views.

I am, etc.,

T. HARRISON
