Farm workers head for Canada
published: Tuesday | June 21, 2005

Dionne Rose, Staff Reporter

BETWEEN NOW and September, some 3,000 farm workers will be heading for Canada to take up jobs on farms in that country.

Just last week, 500 workers left on flights to Canada, with another 500 scheduled to leave this week, said Barrington Bailey, senior director of manpower services in the Ministry of Labour.

Mr. Bailey explained that the numbers have increased because July to September was the peak season for the reaping of fruit crops such as apples, pears, plums and vegetables, including cucumbers and tomatoes.

On the other hand, Mr. Bailey said that the United States' hotel programme was having a down time, with only 60 workers leaving last week.

In the meantime, the ministry has already identified 300 persons who will be certified by HEART, the local training agency, for its low-skilled workers programme in Canada.
