Postal code suggestions
published: Tuesday | June 21, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS IS in response to a letter written by Mr. K. Yap, published Thursday, June 16, in reply to a publication from The Jamaica Post, June 13, about new postal codes. Mr. Yap proposed the postal codes should be as follows:

Kingston & St. Andrew could be combined to read K 1 followed by a five-digit postal code broken down into geographical quadrants, eg. - Clarendon - CL01: Hanover HA02, St. Elizabeth EL08.

It seems easy enough, but how do you handle the divisions that use lot numbers?

Problems already exist within the postal service with the same street name for example; Riverside Drive can be found in Kingston 19, Kingston 17 and, I believe, Kingston 8 also. Most often the letters are rerouted to the wrong address.

My suggestions are as follows:

Bridgeport Lot 738 would become - BdgL738/Greater Portmore Lot187 would be PrtL187;

Riverside Dr. Kgn 19 would become Riverside D. Kgn 0019/ Riverside Dr. Kgn17/Riverside Drive, Kgn 0017.

Spanish Town does not have postal codes, only addresses. Cumberland Road in Spanish Town would become Sptn01A, for each section or division of Spanish Town would be four letters representing the parish, followed by two numbers and a letter to identify the different streets and/or lanes.

To reiterate, except for Kingston & St. Andrew, all parishes should use four letters, followed by two numbers and a letter of the alphabet representing each section of that parish.

I am, etc.,

YVONNE WILSON
