Industry joins forces with KSAFA
published: Tuesday | June 21, 2005

Winston Chung-Fah (second left) kicks off the Shipping Industry/KSAFA Under-15 football competition at the Harbour View Mini Stadium last Thursday. Participating in the kick-off are (from left): Garth Kitson, general manager (operations) of Kingston Wharves Limited; Stephen Bell (partly hidden), general manager of the Caribbean Shipping Association and chairman of KSAFA's sponsorship and marketing committee, and Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, president of KSAFA.

THE LOCAL shipping industry, led by the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), has joined forces with the Kingston & St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) in support of this year's under-15 competition for the Winston Chung-Fah trophy.

Charles Johnston, executive chairman of Jamaica Freight & Shipping Ltd. and a past president of the SAJ, was instrumental in garnering the support of the shipping fraternity to the tune of half-million dollars that will cover prize monies, referee fees, administrative costs, trophies and awards.

At a function held at the offices of the SAJ in Newport West last Tuesday, Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, KSAFA president, thanked the sponsors from the local shipping industry on behalf of the 25 participating teams in Kingston and St. Andrew.

PROUD HISTORY

Grantley Stephenson, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Kingston Wharves Limited, in presenting his cheque to Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, noted that his organisation has a proud history of support for local football and other sports.

Trevor Riley, general manager of the SAJ, presented cheques on behalf of his association, as well as for Jamaica Freight & Shipping, Seaboard Jamaica, Maritime Towing, and Port Contractors Ltd.

In her remarks, CorahAnn Robertson-Sylvester, CEO of Seaboard Jamaica Limited, stated that her company's sponsorship was based on the belief that sport is a useful means of inculcating discipline, teamwork and positive self-esteem among Jamaican youth.

Paula Pinnock, managing director of Port Contractors Ltd., led the function in a prayer for God's blessing on the competition and on all players, organisers and sponsors.

The function to announce the shipping industry's sponsorship of KSAFA's under-15 tournament was chaired by Clyde Jureidini, chairman of KSAFA's technical committee, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Stephen Bell, chairman of KSAFA's sponsorship and marketing committee and general manager of the Caribbean Shipping Association.

Winston Chung-Fah, who has dedicated his life to the development of local football, came home to kick off the competition last Thursday at the Harbour View Mini Stadium when reigning champions Harbour View played Port Royal. The competition ends in early July 2005, and the winning team will claim the Winston Chung-Fah Trophy and $80,000 in first-prize money.
