Boxhill: Announcement comes at a very exciting time for us. - FILE

LOCAL YOUTH football received a major boost yesterday with the announcement of a $2.5 million sponsorship package at the Jamaica Football Federation's headquarters by the local arm of Pepsi.

The money will be used to run the all-island Pepsi Under-15 confederation competition, which is scheduled to begin on July 2.

"Pepsi's announcement comes at a very exciting time for us as far as the development of local football is concerned," president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Crenston Boxhill said.

In addition to Pepsi's sponsorship, the JFF has pledged to contribute $650,000, making total sponsorship of the event $3.15 million.

"The fact that we have a major corporate company coming on board to sponsor our national Under-15 programme speaks volumes for our football. The future looks bright and I am certain that in the next four or five years we will see outstanding talents emerging from this competition," said national coach Wendell Downswell.
