Let Port Arthur Lane remain
published: Thursday | June 23, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a resident of Annotto Bay who has lived all my life on Port Arthur Lane and have grown to know and respect the rich history of my town. My foreparents boasted our rich heritage as being one that had three ports at one time. Of course, one of the ports was located on my lane, Port Arthur Lane.

I believe it is a total disgrace and blatant disrespect by the St. Mary Parish Council to remove the sign 'Port Arthur Lane' and replace it with 'Ross Square'.

It is not about politics, it is about my history, it is about identifying the place I live. If you want to name the Annotto Bay Square 'Ross Square' then so be it. After all, I believe you could find something or somewhere better to name for the former Member of Parliament, but I ask that you leave what you came and saw. You saw Port Arthur Lane, put it back. All the persons who live on Port Arthur Lane want you to replace their road sign; they believe they have been robbed of their heritage.

I am, etc.,

PORT ARTHUR LANE

RESIDENT
