SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:
A PALL of gloom hung over the Jones Avenue area of Spanish Town yesterday following the killing of a 21-year-old man by a gunman.
The dead man has since been identified as Ricardo Davis, a labourer. He had gone to the community to visit his mother whom he had not seen in two years.
Reports reaching The Gleaner are that at 9:15 a.m., Davis went into the community to visit his mother, Pearlina Tomlinson. While standing on the side of the road, he was approached by a man who engaged him in a conversation. A few minutes afterwards, another man, armed with a gun approached Davis and fired shots hitting him all over the body. He died on the spot.
Reports are that Davis' two younger brothers, aged five, and 11, ran from the area while the gunman calmly walked away.
A QUIET PERSON
When The Gleaner visited the Jones Avenue area yesterday, several residents said that "Davis was a quiet, loving individual."
"He was always a quiet person who did not do much talking and it is sad how dem kill him," remarked a resident.
The Gleaner news team visited the Spanish Town Police Station where the mother of the deceased gave the team a good account of her son.
"I tell him not to come back as a 2003 dem shot him inna him hand and mi beg him no fi come back dung ya and imagine him return this morning and dem kill him. The sad thing about it is that I never get to see him as is when mi come back from out a road mi likkle son tell mi dat gunman shot Cardo," remarked Pearlina between sobs.
She told The Gleaner that her son recently received a car from his grandfather and was a hard worker and will be sadly missed.
According to Detective Cor-poral Craig Walker of the Spanish Town Police Station, there is political tension in the area and it is believed that Davis was shot because he is believed to be a supporter of the Jamaica Labour Party.
The killing of Davis brings to 122, the number of murders in the St. Catherine North Police Division since the start of the year.
