Corporate support for Million Woman March
published: Wednesday | June 29, 2005

Robert Lalah, Staff Reporter

SEVERAL BIG wigs of corporate Jamaica have joined hands in a show of support for the upcoming 'Million Woman March'.

The historic march is to be held on Emancipation Day (August 1), and is being organised by female support group 'Mother in Crisis', along with a group of Jamaicans residing in different countries across the world.

The organisers say the aim of the march is to gather as many Jamaican women as possible in one place to publicly declare that they will no longer turn a blind eye to criminality. They say the plan is to have the women take a vow on that day to speak out and act against criminals, including their own sons and lovers when applicable, in an all out war against crime.

The march is set to begin at the National Stadium and culminate at Heroes Circle in Kingston.

SURPRISED BY THE SUPPORT

Doreen Billings, head of Mother in Crisis, told The Gleaner yesterday that she has been surprised by the support the march has already received from corporate Jamaica. She has been contacted by the heads of several companies, who have pledged their support in various forms. From telecom giants to fledgling television stations, the offers of assistance have come from all over.

Among the companies to join the effort to date, is Cable and Wireless, which has provided an office and meeting room to the organisers of the march. This includes e-mail and telephone access. Local cable station Hype TV has also sponsored, developed and has been broadcasting commercials promoting the group and the upcoming march.

Meanwhile, Sun Island Limited has donated printed polo shirts to the effort and local restaurant company Island Grill has also hopped on to the effort.

An obviously enthused Doreen Billings said this support bodes well for a successful and meaningful march.

"More plans will be announced soon. But this is really coming together well. We should really make a loud statement together as women on that day. The criminals will hear our voice, and it will be magnificent!" she said.
