BSI to probe Kid Lane shooting
published: Friday | July 1, 2005

Laura Matthews, Gleaner Writer

THE BUREAU of Special Investigation (BSI) has been called on to probe what residents claimed to be another controversial killing by the police. The shooting occurred in the Kid Lane area of St. Andrew South, where concerned citizens mounted several roadblocks and protested on Wednesday morning.

This is the third fatal shooting in the St. Andrew South police division since Monday that the BSI has been asked to investigate.

On Monday one man was killed on Grass Quit Glade and another on Balcombe Drive. The police said three illegal firearms were recovered in both incidents.

In Wednesday's shooting, the police said a Taurus 9-mm pistol and five rounds of ammunition were found beside the body of 28-year-old Christopher Turner, alias 'Jerry' of no fixed address.

SHOOT-OUT

They have reported that about 6:00 a.m. three men were accosted along Kid Lane. Allegations are that the lawmen came under fire, which resulted in a shoot-out. When the shooting ended, one man was killed, another taken into custody and the third escaped.

Constable Oliver Livingston of the Constabulary Communi-cation Network said a police party carried out an operation in the area, in search of Turner and other members of the 'Whop Dem' gang'.

Residents have denied the police's story. According to Shereen Turner, her brother was killed, then dragged through a window to the police vehicle which took his body away.

Neighbours said he was innocent and had no weapon on him at the time.

"When him deh here nothing caan gwaan, the place calm... cause him sey a livity, more life and more money," declared one woman, who was seen at the deceased's home.
