THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT'S NOW legal for gays to marry in Canada, the third country in the world (besides Belgium and Netherlands) to legalise same sex unions, with the same rights as traditional unions.
Bill C-38 was just passed in Canada, a country well known for its progressive laws and social practices. The law, which was already in place in many of the country's provinces, is yet another milestone for this great country which continues to be ranked highly on the U.N. list of best places in the world to live, based on social, economic and political factors.
It reinforces the notion of human rights, which is the corner stone of any progressive society, and the basis for development of law and order. We must have respect and love for each other, regardless of our differences and similarities, regardless of our personal biases and prejudices. These biases and prejudices can remain personal, but should never evolve into laws.
Despite minor opposition to the passing of this bill, it was still expedited and was passed much earlier than anticipated. Polls in Canada show that most Canadians endorse the view that consenting adults, who care to marry, should be allowed to do so without fear or prejudice based on sex or sexuality or the hindrance of the law.
Bravo Canada!
