THE EDITOR, Sir:ON FRIDAY, July 1, at about 11:30 a.m., my 85-year-old stepdad and his eight-year-old grandson were walking from Edgewater along Portmore Parkway towards the direction of Portmore Mall, when upon leaving the bridge by Bridgeview/Edgewater, a car that was going in the opposite direction (towards Edgewater) pulled up and someone inside hailed my stepdad as if he knew him.
Being 85 and not seeing 100 per cent well, my stepdad thought that this man was actually a friend especially after he gave the grandson $100 and chatted him up like he knew him also.
This 'stranger' then asked my stepdad where he was going as if he would give him a lift. My stepdad unwittingly said "To the bank" as he was going to the NCB branch in the Portmore Mall area to collect his pension and do some shopping.
SQUEEZED INTO FRONT SEAT
He was quickly squeezed into the front passenger seat along with another man, plus the driver. His grandson was 'welcomed' in the back where three other persons sat.
All this time, my stepdad was under the impression that these persons were known to him because they seemed so kind.
The car actually turned around and now headed in the direction my stepdad was going - towards the Waterford direction.
Having two passengers plus the driver in the front seat of a car is a bit cumbersome to say the least and according to my stepdad there was a lot of "shuffling and readjusting" going on in the front seat. When the car reached the T-Junction, it stopped and the driver said he was going towards Waterford.
My stepdad and his grandson got out and it was after the car drove off that he realised that his "pocket felt light".
These 'good Samaritans'stole his passport, his pension book and about $3,800.
I am kindly asking for the return of my stepdad's passport and pension book as the loss of these is greatly inconveniencing to an 85-year-old man.
The initials of the name in the passport are 'N.O.D.'
