Jamaica a place of terror
published: Friday | July 8, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I MUST say that I am appalled at the way beautiful Jamaica has fast become a place of terror and executions. Jamaica, as I once knew it, was a place where foreigners and live-abroad natives always wanted to visit.

Jamaica is now infested with too many criminals who have no respect for the security forces, but on a daily basis, tend to be a few steps ahead of the security forces, both in terms of ammunition and witty communication.

Being a past member of the country's security forces, I cannot help but say that the Government needs to take more drastic actions in weeding out these hardened criminals. Arm the JCF and JDF with more high-powered weapons and vehicles in order to combat the criminals. Reward the security forces monetarily for the dangerous line of work that they do. Doing this is a lucrative incentive which will produce better crime-fighting results.

Re-implement the hanging system. Though some people may be opposed to this idea and think that it may be barbaric, it will surely create fear in these criminals. Penalise citizens who wilfully harbour or withhold information about criminals from the security forces.

I have no political experience in governing a country, but I think the Government can do a lot better in putting an end to this escalation in violence. I must say, however, that I think the Government is doing a great job at separating and disciplining unscrupulous security personnel from their jobs. When they are caught breaking the law that they themselves are paid to uphold, they should pay dearly for it. They disgrace the uniform.

I am, etc.,
