Beware of crocodiles!
published: Sunday | July 10, 2005

This crocodile was captured by residents of the Greater Portmore community having come out of a gully which overflowed during the heavy rains brought by Hurricane Dennis. - CARLINGTON WILMOT/FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHER

THE NATIONAL Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is advising the public to exercise extreme caution in areas close to swamps, wetlands and gullies due to the recent heavy rains and flooding caused by Hurricane Dennis.

Persons are also advised to avoid bathing in or near these areas as crocodiles are likely to move with floodwaters and may be found in areas outside of their original habitats.

NEPA is warning residents not to feed the crocodiles as well as advising that there is no payment for the apprehension or recovery of the reptiles.

If you spot any of these creatures outside of their habitat please call NEPA at 754-7540 or 1-888-991-5005 or the nearest police station.

Crocodiles are protected under the Wild life and Protection Act and it is therefore illegal to kill, catch or molest them.
