New-look Windies hang on for draw

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, CMC:

WICKETKEEPER/BATSMAN Kumar Sangakkara yesterday dominated the West Indies with a polished century as the Sri Lanka XI held the ascendancy in their drawn two-day tour match against West Indies at the Nondescript Cricket Club Ground.

Responding to the touring side's disastrous first innings score of 110 all out, the Sri Lankans gathered 382 runs, behind Sangakkara's steady knock of 109.

The tall off-spinner Omari Banks returned figures of six for 146 off 37 overs to be the chief wicket-taker for the West Indies, who finished their second innings on 109 for four.

Tuning up for Wednesday's start of the first Test, Sangakkara - playing the warm-up match as a batsman - faced 147 balls for his 109, laced with 12 fours and one six, after the Sri Lanka XI had restarted their innings from an overnight 152 for one.

He shared in a third-wicket stand of 154 with Thilan Samaraweera (95) that frustrated the West Indies bowling attack, missing its regulars because of a players' contract dispute that resulted in a new-look team making the tour.

The Sri Lankan captain, Marvan Atapattu, who was unbeaten on 77 overnight, did not resume his innings due to flu.

The Sri Lankan players, who will feature in the Test series, gained valuable match practice with the exception of Mahela Jayawardene, who was dislodged by pacer Tino Best without scoring.

Best finished with two for 69 off 17.3 overs and Runako Morton, one for 12 off 6.1 overs, was the other wicket-taker for the West Indies.

The 19-year-old Xavier Marshall spent some valuable time at the crease, making 43, with three fours and one six in the second innings, but the rest of the top order had little to be satisfied about, with Marshall's opening partner Sylvester Joseph (0), Morton (23), captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul (10) all failing to get significant scores.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin (17) and Banks (9) were the not out batsmen at the end.

Narsingh Deonarine was not considered for selection in the West Indies XI as a result of flu symptoms causing him to miss the practice session on Friday, while pacers Daren Powell and Jermaine Lawson were rested ahead of the first Test match.
