Trenchfield to lead U-19s again
published: Tuesday | July 12, 2005

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

JAMIE TRENCHFIELD has been selected to lead Jamaica's Under-19 team for the upcoming TLC Group West Indies Under-19 Cricket Challenge which will be played in St. Vincent between July 30 and August 20.

The stylish Kingston College batsman and part-time spinner who captained the team to first place in the three-day version of the competition here, and second in the one dayers is one of eight players surviving from last year's squad.

BATTING DEPARTMENT

Albert Gopie, Ziggy Levy, Zaniffe Fowler, Christie Jones, wicket-keeper batsmen Damion Ebanks and Jeffrey Scott make up a batting department which is packed with experienced players. They are expected to lead the way for Shacoya Thomas, Nickoy Samuels and Andre McCarthy who are the other uncapped batsmen in the Junior Bennett-coached side.

Thomas, Eltham High's 16 year-old sensation was one of the top batsmen in the schoolboy season this year, producing an undefeated 325 against St. Catherine in the urban Grace Kennedy Shield final against St Catherine High.

Meanwhile, spinners Alton Beckford and Dennis Bull are the only two capped bowlers in the Jamaican squad which is completed by Andre Russell, Ricardo Sitcheron, Omar Brooks and Dane Johnson and spinners Cordell Simpson and Marcel Parchment .

With the exception of Trenchfield, none of the players selected are guaranteed a place in the final 14 that will travel to the Caribbean island and thus they will have to impress the selectors in the series of practice matches that has been organised for them. The players are currently in camp at G.C Foster College.
