RESIDENTS OF the Dunrobin and Red Hills Road communities joined with the Rotary Club of Kingston on Tuesday in celebrating the opening of the new Red Hills Road Multi-purpose Park. The park replaces the former dustbowl and makeshift playground that was the source of respiratory illness for many children at the Dunrobin schools and surrounding communities.
Completed at a cost of J$15 million, the park was the Rotary Club of Kingston's major project for the year 2004-2005.
FEATURES OF THE PARK
Speaking at the ceremony, Project Committee chairman, Christopher Issa, highlighted features of the park which "include a new cricket pitch, an underground irrigation system with an 8,000 gallon storage tank and a water retrieval and treatment system which allows us to collect water from the roofs of the school buildings to help water the field."
The park also boasts basketball and netball courts, a walking track, as well as an entrance road and parking area. Mr. Issa stated that the infrastructure works included the construction of a major box drain and over 500 feet of underground drainage.
The community-based NGO, Future Vision Foundation, will coordinate management of the park facility together with the other stakeholders. Funds for ongoing maintenance will be earned from rental of billboards and the field for appropriate sporting & entertainment activities.
Immediate past president of the Rotary Club and present chairman of the Future Vision Foundation, Andre Hylton, thanked the many donors to the project and urged them to continue supporting future phases of the park which include spectator stands.
