Higgler freed of murder
published: Thursday | July 14, 2005

A HOME Circuit Court jury deliberated for three hours on Tuesday before freeing 29-year-old higgler Mark Barnett of the murder of a policeman two years ago.

Barnett, of 4 Law Street in Kingston, had been on trial since last week for the murder of 40-year-old Corporal Michael Campbell who was attached to the Motor Patrol Division.

The policeman was chased by gunmen and then shot dead at a car park on Orange Street in downtown Kingston on May 31, 2003.

A security guard who was the main witness for the prosecution testified before Justice Kay Beckford and the jury that on May 31, 2003, he saw Barnett and another man near the car park.

The security guard said the other man fired a shot killing the policeman.

Barnett, who was represented by attorney-at-law Ravil Golding, said he did not know anything about the murder of the policeman.
