UWI denies dumping raw sewage into gully
published: Friday | July 15, 2005

MCKENZIE

THE UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) has written off as false a staggering indictment levied against the institution by Kingston's Mayor, Desmond McKenzie.

During the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation's (KSAC) monthly press briefing on Tuesday, Mayor Mckenzie chastised the UWI for allegedly dumping thousands of gallons of raw sewage into the Goldsmith gully.

14 DAYS TO DESIST

The mayor gave the institution 14 days to desist from the unhealthy and unsightly practice or face legal action.

However, the statements made by the mayor have shocked the university's administration.

"The university is surprised at the statement that it discharges raw sewage into drains," read a statement from June V. Degia, acting public relations officer at the UWI.

She further said: "At no time has the university discharged raw sewage in any open drain. What is discharged in the drain is the final treated effluent from the plant, which poses no health hazard."
