... And brunch in the Harbour
published: Friday | July 15, 2005

Gabrielle Seaga, daughter of Carla and Edward Seaga, enjoys her favourite Excelsior water crackers more than most things. A bundle of energy, she is currently in summer school as she prepares to start prep school in September and attended the brunch hosted by Hon. Edward Seaga in honour of the West Kingston Development Committee at Morgan's Harbour on Sunday.

ON SUNDAY, the executive of the West Kingston Development Committee gathered for brunch at the newly refurbished Morgan's Harbour Hotel. The trust, which has been hosting its annual fund-raising dinner-dance ever since it was first formed 27 years ago, will not have an event this year.

Chairman Eddie Shoucair said several pressing engagements, both locally and overseas, will prevent the event taking place this year so it will take place by Valentine's Day next year.

University of the West Indies Distinguished Fellow and former Opposition Leader and chairman of the West Kingston Trust, Edward Seaga, thanked the committee for their dedicated work and outlined some of the areas that had benefited from the funds over the years. These are culture, sports and education.

Mr. Seaga said some of the future funds will go towards a 30-piece orchestra that is now being formed in the community. "I look forward to the day when they can play for the annual gala event," he said. The Jamaica Defence Force and Dr. Olive Lewin are helping with training the band members, he said.

Mr. Seaga also said that so far pledges to the tune of $4 million have been received towards constructing an early childhood training centre for basic school teachers and it will serve the entire western end of the city.

"I want to see the day when inner-city children have the same opportunities to advance educationally as children from privileged homes."

At brunch were: Barry Thompson, treasurer of the committee and wife Ivene; Effie Lakasingh, vice-chairman, and Seragh Laksingh; Eddie Shoucair, committee chairman; Andrew Mullings; Violet Collins; Caroline Kelly; Troy Caine; Jean Frazer; Robert Macmillan and Rachel Gore with her daughter Dana Shoucair and Gabrielle Seaga.
