SCHILLONIE CALVERT captured Jamaica's first medal - a bronze - in the girls' 100m dash at the fourth World Youth Athletics Championships in Marrakesh, Morocco yesterday.
Calvert, beaten by two Americans, was timed in 11.44 seconds, the same time as second-place finisher Ebony Collins.
Bianca Knight won the event in a World Youth leading time of 11.38 seconds.
In the boys' event, Yohan Blake was seventh in 10.65. The Great Britain pair of Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (10.35 PR) and Alex Nelson (10.36) finished one-two while Trinidadian Keston Bledman (10.55) was third.
Kimona Smith was ninth in the girls' triple jump final, leaping 12.62m. Li Sha of China won the event with a leap of 13.81m
In the girls' 400m semi-finals, Jamaica lost one of its entries when Shakeeri Cole's 55.49 seconds clocking gave her fifth in heat one.
It took a personal best from Bobby-Gaye Wilkins (54.07) to push her in today's final.
RECORD
The semi-final was highlighted by Nawal El Jack of Sudan who set a new Championships record in the event.
The 16-year-old, who crossed the line in 51.83, beat the previous Championships record of 52.19 held since the second edition of the World Youth Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, by the U.S.'s Stephanie Smith.
Like Sonita Sutherland who won silver at last year's World Juniors, sixth-fastest Wilkins is drawn in one and will have to work overtime to get by El Jack, American Brandi Cross (52.46) and Aymee Martinez (52.57), the top three on times.
In the boys' equivalent, Teo Bennett fell out at the semi-final stage, finishing fifth in semi-final one in 48.96.
The boys' 800m proved to be too much for CARIFTA Games Under-17 800m champion Theon O'Connor who failed to make it to the final.
O'Connor's personal best of 1:53.00 was only good enough for sixth in semi-final two of yesterday's event. Kenya's Mumbwa Kivuna Jackson won O'Connor's in 1:50.87.
In the girls' 400m hurdles first round, Jamaica's entries, Andrea Sutherland (1:01.49) and Judith Riley (1:02.55), finished fourth in heat one and two respectively, but failed to advance.
Omari Dookie failed to make headway in the boys' high jump, this as his season best 2.00m clearance was not enough for a final spot.
