WEATHER PERMITTING, the normally quiet rural towns of Malvern, Leeds and Chelsea in St. Elizabeth will come alive today as the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) 2005 Tarmac Stages Rally gets under way.
"This promises to be a very good event because the roads are in excellent condition, plus we are expecting a massive turnout," said Errol Anderson, president of the JMMC.
Dubbed the Digicel/Kirdex Tarmac Stages Rally, the JMMC has reported that this is the final tarmac event on their calendar. The rally will be held in the hills of Malvern and is scheduled to start at Kinkead's Texaco Service Station, Pedro Cross, where registration and check-in will close off at 8 a.m.
According to the JMMC president, technical inspection of the vehicles will take place between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The first car is expected to leave the starting point at 9 a.m.
TEMPORARY CLOSURES
The stages for the event will be Malvern, Leeds and Chelsea. The competitors will run each stage at least three times. Several busy thoroughfares in these rural towns will be temporarily closed by the police to facilitate the free
flow of vehicles participating in the rally.
Among those expected to do well are Gary Gregg, who did extremely well at the recent international rally held in Barbados. Douglas 'Hollywood' Gore and his navigator, Mark 'Submarine' Nelson in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 will no doubt be trying to defend the title they won last year.
The team of Richard 'Sir Rich' Rerrie/David 'Neil' Baugh in the Knot Guilty Subaru Impreza WRX Sti Version 7, will also be out to stamp their claim on this event.
Other competitors expected to do well are the teams of David Summerbell/Stephen Gunter in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6.5, Peter Moodie Jr./Mike Fennel Jr. in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, Rory King/Winston Dawson in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, Dave Lee/Courtney Murphy in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III, and Junior Barnes/David Watkin in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V.
