Curfew reimposed
published: Sunday | July 17, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

A CURFEW order was re-imposed last night in several communities across the island and will remain in effect until 8:00 a.m. today.

"While we have lifted the curfew in some areas, we took a decision to reimpose the curfew order in some parishes," Acting Deputy Commissioner Linval Bailey told The Sunday Gleaner last night.

The curfew order has been lifted in the parishes of St. Thomas, Portland and St. Mary. Among the areas remaining under curfew were the commercial district of downtown Kingston, Spanish Town, the affected areas of Portmore, St. Catherine and Taylor Land in Bull Bay, where scores of families were evacuated.

Parts of Clarendon, St. Elizabeth, Hanover, Westmore-land and Trelawny were also under curfew. DCP Bailey said residents had been complying with the curfew order and the police had had very little problem during the passage of Hurricane Emily.

In Clarendon, a man who refused to stay off the street was arrested and charged with breaches of the curfew order. The police said he was warned on at least one occasion before action was taken. Shortly after, he was seen acting suspiciously in the commercial zone of May Pen. He was then detained by the police.

According to DCP Bailey, there were no reports of any looting or major incidents. The police were kept busy assisting the emergency response teams and out in their numbers patrolling the streets.

Meanwhile, Police Com-missioner Lucius Thomas, along with several senior officers, were observed monitoring islandwide activities at the special command post set up at his Hope Road headquarters.
