JAMAICA'S PAN American champion Michael Frater and Olympic relay gold medallist Aleen Bailey won the men's and women's 100m sprints at yesterday's Meeting de Madrid 2005, an IAAF Super Grand Prix event in Spain.
Frater, who made it to the final with his 10.39 seconds for second in heat one, returned to produce a 10.22 second clocking to beat American Coby Miller (10.23) by a hundredth of a second.
Australian Josh Ross was third in 10.26 while Ainsley Waugh, Frater's teammate on Jamaica's team to the World Championships in Helsinki next month, was fifth in 10.38.
Bailey, who took the fastest time (11.61) into the final, won in 11.39 seconds ahead of Glory Alozie, a sprint hurdler (11.44).
National record holder James Beckford (8.24m) was second in the men's long jump, beaten by American Dwight Phillips (8.47m)
NON-STARTER
Sherone Simpson was a non-starter in the women's 100m.
Michael Blackwood (45.35) was beaten into second place of the men's 400m by Gary Kikaya of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (45.15).
In the women's equivalent, Lorraine Fenton (50.95) finished third while national champion Shericka Williams was fourth in 51.25. American Monique Hennegan won the event in 50.58 over Mexican Ana Guevara (50.95).
Dean Griffiths (49.18) and Ian Weakley (49.58) finished one-two in the men's 400m hurdles B race. American Bershawn Jackson (47.92) won the A race.
In the men's sprint hurdles, Maurice Wignall (13.64) was third in the 110m hurdles B race which was won by Sherhiy Demydyuk of Ukraine (13.54). Anwar Moore of the US (13.29) took the A race.
Ronetta Smith failed to finish in the women's 800m which was won by Cuban Zulia Calayud (1:48.81).
Elva Goulbourne (6.81m) finished sixth in the women's long jump. Russian Tatyana Kotova won the event with a leap of 7.20m.
