Independence is a process

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THIS IS a note responding to a letter from a Mr. Lee Trucks in The Gleaner, Saturday, July 16, questioning our readiness for independence.
Dear Mr. Trucks,
I noticed in your article degrading Jamaica's right to independence from Britain, that you forgot to include the fact that the much vaunted U.S. you so readily quoted was also a dependent of Britain! I wonder what would have been the US' position in the world today if their outlook was akin to yours.
Many quote the great things about America today, conveniently forgetting that their independence was over 200 years ago. Check the history of the United States and you will see that at 43 years of age they were in more dire straits than what Jamaica is in today! It is a process and it takes time. There were those in America who thought like you do. Their descendants are now enjoying the lifestyle associated with defining THEIR own future. I am glad that others agitated for their freedom from colonial masters because we all enjoy the fruits now. I will take a little 'settling' anytime as long as I decide if and when I move. I respect those who try to take charge of their own affairs. I hope that you do.
Jamaica will yet become a force to reckon with, and I know that your descendants will be grateful to those of us who stood up for our independence. Please do not let them be ashamed that you, by virtue of wanting the goodies now, never took a stance for their future!!
I am, etc.,
